Anotherm substrate technology from TT electronics IRC Advanced Film Div. can be used as a replacement for incandescent and fluorescent lighting in a number of high brightness LED illumination and display applications.
An anodized substrate is providing a cost effective replacement for conventional lighting sources, according to TT electronics IRC Advanced Film Div. Its Anotherm technology, it says, is being specified for a variety of high-brightness LED illustration and display applications by providing the necessary thermal management for LED operation and prolonging the LED lifespan.
“Our Anotherm substrates are being populated with LEDs and used as replacements for incandescent and fluorescent lighting in a variety of applications,” said Tom Morris, applications engineering manager for the division. “The Anotherm technology efficiently conducts heat away from the LEDs, increasing their lifespan and light output.”
The substrate material lets design engineers mount visible LEDs and other components directly to it with no need for attached heat sinks, mounting hardware, and other associated costs. Applications for the substrates include signage and displays, emergency vehicle lighting, and architectural and general lighting. The technology consists of a thermally conductive, aluminum alloy substrate insulated by a thermally conductive, chemically grown, anodized dielectric layer, with solderable screen-printed conductors applied to the anodized layer.
Substrates have an insulation system consisting of a thin layer of anodized aluminum oxide that is chemically grown on the aluminum core, producing a dielectric layer approximately 0.0014-in. thick (35
