The modern supply chain consists of a network of manufacturing and distribution facilities and processes that procure raw materials, transform these materials into intermediate or finished goods, and then distribute these goods to customers. Years ago, these chains may have been much simpler and easier to understand. However, increasing efforts to reduce costs through outsourcing and a shift towards distributed manufacturing (along with the recent economic slowdown) have transformed today’s supply chain into a series of complex relationships among multiple supplier/customers.
