Bulgaria’s largest thermal power-plant, Maritza East 2 electric utility—near Stara Zagora, awarded an $11-million contract to Honeywell International Inc . The upgrade will completely refurbish the controls for three units that produce 178 MW each. The upgrade will improve efficiency, safety, technology, and business applications.
The project’s focus is modernization of the plant with a safe, reliable, robust automation system that will integrate and use process data more effectively. Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS), field instrumentation, basic design, engineering and installation services will be provided by Honeywell. Honeywell will deliver the Experion system, with an integrated burner and safety system, and its well-known PHD for business applications. Additionally, the process-history database (PHD) will enable the utility to install sophisticated business applications in the future.
The project will be completed in three phases, with commissioning and start-up to be completed by 2008.
Maritza is owned by NEK—the national electric company—and supplies base-load power-generation capacity to the country. Atanas Dimitrov, general director of Maritza East 2, said, “We selected Honeywell because of its ability to provide the highest level of technology, competitive pricing, and local service capabilities.
