San Leandro, CA— To drive operational efficiency and real-time collaboration for pharmaceutical and biotechnology users, OSIsoft Inc. reports that it’s supporting Microsoft Digital Pharma , an open standards-based vision and solutions framework. Digital Pharma reportedly will help improve productivity, integrate disparate data sources, and enable better collaboration in pharmaceutical applications.

OSIsoft’s RtPM platform, powered by the PI System, will be part of Digital Pharma’s effort to meet growing demand for instant, critical, actionable operational performance metrics across pharmaceutical and biotechnology organizations. Users reportedly also will benefit from RtPM’s greater return on existing and new investments and continuous process improvement.

Pharmaceutical and biotechnology organizations know they need to adopt manufacturing innovations to increase product quality standards, improve compliance obligations, and gain real-time insight into their batch processes to reduce time-to-market. However, many have been slow to adopt new technologies due to economic pressures and the high costs of updating or configuring old systems, while meeting stringent FDA regulations.

OSIsoft’s RtPM uses Microsoft’s Windows Server, Microsoft Office, and its Smart Client infrastructure to help improve life science organizations by providing operational insights to all employees, leading to better, faster, more relevant decisions and actions throughout the operations cycle. In addition, RtPM’s events-driven tools use Microsoft .Net technology and Information Worker (IW) platform in a service-oriented architecture (SOA) to deliver unified, role-based portal views of information across the enterprise. These capabilities enable quality and consistency, batch accuracy, regulatory compliance, and cost control.

‘With RtPM, OSIsoft helps companies achieve speed-to-insight, which is one of the industry imperatives Digital Pharma’s vision and solutions framework seeks to address, as well as easily meet compliance standards,’ says Steve Shihadeh, general manager of Microsoft Healthcare and Life Sciences. ‘We’re pleased to align with strong partners like OSIsoft, who have developed valuable industry-specific solutions, and who really exemplify the Digital Pharma vision.’

RtPM gives drug manufacturers an accurate, real-time view of operations at any point in the production cycle. Users can quickly analyze performance of multiple manufacturing paths, along with detailed individual equipment performance. In addition, RtPM is a resource for regulatory compliance, providing full audit trail capabilities, and gathering real-time and historical data from diverse sources, including events, databases and enterprise systems.

“Because of the increase in production errors and the FDA’s demonstrated support of PAT, the life sciences industry must adopt new manufacturing practices to raise quality standards and improve inefficiencies,’ said Michael Saucier, OSIsoft’s marketing VP. ‘We’re delighted to be working with Microsoft on the Digital Pharma initiative to deliver proven, complimentary technologies, which not only speed effective, critical decision making, but offer a lower total cost of ownership to support industry-wide innovation and improvement.’
