Pack Expo 2002: Micron PharmaWorks, Coreco’s IPD develop code inspection system

Chicago, IL—Micron PharmaWorks and Coreco Imaging's intelligent products division (IPD) announced Nov. 4 that they've developed an online Reduced Space Symbology (RSS)-14 code inspection system for single-dose packages in the pharmaceutical industry.

Chicago, IL— Micron PharmaWorks Coreco Imaging ‘s intelligent products division (IPD) announced Nov. 4 that they’ve developed an online Reduced Space Symbology (RSS)-14 code inspection system for single-dose packages in the pharmaceutical industry. Micron Pharmaworks (Tampa, FL) is a venture of Micron Automation that offers custom services for thermoformed packaging of pharmaceutical products. Coreco Imaging (St. Laurent, Quebec, Canada) is a machine vision manufacturer.

RSS-14 bar code symbologies developed by the Uniform Code Council incorporate more information in less space than other bar code symbologies, and a primary application for this new code is in pharmaceutical manufacturing and tracking. Micron PharmaWorks collaborated with IPD on developing a machine vision-based solution for reading this new symbology online on single-dose packages in a production environment. The new inspection system features IPD’s NetSight general-purpose machine vision system, which now supports customized software for decoding RSS-14 symbology.

“The flexibility, extensibility and ease of setup and configuration of IPD’s NetSight makes it the ideal product for solving immediate customer requirements for reading RSS-14 in its current configuration, as well as supporting the code as it evolves,” says Peter Buczynsky, Micron PharmaWorks’ president. “Like many others in the industry, we anticipate that the FDA may soon require all single-dose pharmaceuticals to bear an RSS-14 barcode, and this inspection system will allow our customers to meet that requirement.”
