Strong sales, growth boost MEMS market

Scottsdale, AZ—A strong, eventful 2004 is propelling the worldwide microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) market to grow nearly 20% a year through 2009. According to a recent report from In-Stat , a high-tech market research firm, the MEMS market will expand in terms of unit shipments at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.9% to nearly 6 billion units in 2009. Funding for MEMS companies, says In-Stat, increased by 43.9% in 2004 compared to 2003, as the market continued to rack up strong sales. Year-over-year total MEMS revenues were up 32% from 2003 to 2004, says the report.

Findings in the report, “2005 MEMS Industry Overview and Forecast” showed:

Microfluidic devices accounted for nearly 69% of total unit shipments and 23% of total revenues in 2004;

Communications market is expected to experience the highest CAGR for unit shipments and revenues as more cell phones integrate RF MEMS devices and inertial sensors and the optical networking sector finally embraces MEMS technology;

Industrial segment dominates in terms of revenue in 2004 and remains so throughout the forecast period, despite its fragmented and niche-like nature; and

Top 20 suppliers of MEMS devices accounted for 62.2% of revenues in 2004.
