Houston, TX —According to Industrial Information Resources Inc. (IIR) , two massive semiconductor manufacturing facilities planned for Travis County, Texas, have elevated the area to the top of the list of U.S. counties in industrial project spending. The county is expected to see over $5 billion of spending. Both of the multi-billion dollar projects—one planned by Samsung Austin Semiconductor and the other by Advanced Micro Devices Inc.—are currently scheduled to begin construction in 2006.
IIR’s list incorporates major industrial construction projects of =$1 million scheduled to begin construction in 2006, spanning12 industries, including: power, terminals, oil and gas transmission, oil-and-gas production, synfuels, petroleum refining, chemical processing, metals and minerals, pulp and paper, food and beverage, manufacturing, and pharmaceutical-biotech. IIR’s top 20 list is derived from a total of 4,590 identified, active capital-and-maintenance projects located in 1,434 U.S. counties. These projects have a total investment value of $178 billion.
Gap measurement identifies 25% project fallout—comparing the original 2006 forecast of $238 billion to the current active total. So, since the original forecast, $60 billion worth of industrial projects in the U.S. have been canceled or put on hold.
The top 20 counties represent about 24% of the project spending for 2006, with over $42 billion comprising 257 projects. Most active counties, after Travis County, include Baltimore City/County, MD, with $4 billion from 12 projects and Los Angeles County, CA, with $3.5 billion from 56 projects.
