Hardware — Handheld test, measurement, calibration: The AMS Trex Device Communicator is a safety-rated, ruggedized handheld communicator that enables users to work more efficiently in the field without the need for specialized tools. This is a Control Engineering 2017 Engineers’ Choice Awards Finalist.

The AMS Trex Device Communicator enables maintenance technicians to work more efficiently in the field. Advanced device diagnostic tools allow technicians to fix issues when they find them—reducing the trips back to the shop and minimizing any impact on production. Trex eliminates the need for many specialized tools, including resistors, digital volt meters, and loop calibrators. Users can even power the loop directly from the Trex unit to quickly and easily isolate the root cause of any loop issues. Trex also allows users to configure and test valves inline, significantly reducing the need to pull valves for diagnostics.
With Trex, users can ensure device configuration accuracy and traceability. Whenever Trex connects to the plant’s WiFi network, data is automatically synchronized with the AMS Device Manager database. Any field changes are immediately reflected in the database and are date- and time-stamped in the Audit Trail.
Trex improves efficiency with a modern, intuitive user experience. The large, full-color display and touchscreen, combined with a task-based UI, simplify device diagnostics. Easily zoom in on trend charts or diagnostic data, even when wearing gloves. The screen adjusts to lighting conditions, so whether a user is in a dark corner or the bright sunlight, the screen is clearly visible.
Although the Trex user experience is similar to familiar consumer products, the handheld is safety-rated and ruggedized for industrial user. With Trex, technicians can go in any area of the plant where they have permission to be, confident that they have the right tool for the job.
