Trends, surprises in flowmeters

I read "Trends in Flowmeters—Going with the Future of Flow" [Control Engineering, Nov. '00, p. 91] with much interest. Being somewhat new to the flowmeter segment of the process instrument market, I am truly amazed that so many users continue to employ orifice plate technology to make their flow measurements.

I read “Trends in Flowmeters—Going with the Future of Flow” [ Control Engineering, Nov. ’00, p. 91] with much interest. Being somewhat new to the flowmeter segment of the process instrument market, I am truly amazed that so many users continue to employ orifice plate technology to make their flow measurements. The high costs of installing and maintaining orifice plates and the extra pump capacity required because of the flow restriction, together far outweigh the deceptively low initial equipment price of the orifice plate method.
