Entering the era of GPS-enabled RFID
IDENTEC Solutions will offer a satellite-assisted RFID tag for tracking location and movement of assets and container shipments.
IDENTEC Solutions is prototyping a satellite-assisted RFID tag for tracking location and movement of assets and container shipments. The satellite increases the range of RFID coverage, while a self-tracking GPS tag uses satellites to record and store tracking information that can then be read by conventional RFID readers when it comes within read range.
The read/write range of the tag is in excess of 500 meters.
“It’s based on the IDENTEC long-range RFID platform, and can store GPS coordinates in the tag’s memory,” says Curtis Kieres, an Identec manager. “It then uploads the information to the closest reader it comes in contact with. The unique design reduces infrastructure costs and gives you the ability to trace movement of critical assets over the road and during ocean shipment, expanding use range to a much wider area.”
