Brian Hamler, 25
Calibration Technician II
Advanced Test Equipment Corp
San Diego, CA, United States
What Makes Brian an Engineering Leader
Brian works in the AC/DC section of the calibration laboratory, where he consistently demonstrates technical expertise and problem-solving ability. He can take on a wide variety of calibration challenges—including power supplies, borescopes, fusion splicers and megohmmeters—and reliably develops accurate, efficient calibration solutions.
Brian also performs complex Type A data calibrations to support ISO/IEC 17025 scope expansions and conducts proficiency tests for audit compliance without error. His precision, adaptability and audit-ready execution make a measurable impact on laboratory quality and production.
Leadership & Industry Contributions
Brian has demonstrated leadership by managing workflow and developing team capability in a dynamic laboratory environment. While his supervisor supported production at a secondary building, Brian independently assigned incoming orders to the appropriate technicians based on their skill levels, helping maintain efficiency and turnaround expectations.
In addition to coordinating work, he trained technicians on new and complex equipment, including power loggers, Solmetric sensors and the DSX-5000, strengthening the team’s technical proficiency. Brian also took ownership as lead for ISO/IEC 17025 flicker and harmonics audit verification, coordinating preparation and execution to support compliance.
His ability to lead, train and maintain operational continuity in his supervisor’s absence reflects strong initiative, technical expertise and leadership.
Brian has attended ATEC’s symposium, where he helped attendees better understand equipment. He has also attended the MSC Conference for two consecutive years to deepen his knowledge of calibration and calibration techniques. In addition, Brian has attended and participated in IEEE meetings hosted at ATEC.
Why Brian Chose This Career
Brian chose to become an electrical engineer and calibration technician because he enjoys hands-on work. He was skilled in math at school and saw engineering as a natural fit for his career path.
As a child, Brian enjoyed playing with LEGO bricks, and he knew he would enjoy working on or building equipment that could help society in some way. He chose electrical engineering because of the direction of technological advancement and the role electricity plays in that progress.
