Extending RFID: Motorola inks deal to codevelop long-range RF solutions

Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility Division will codevelop new RFID platforms for specialized long-range RF applications, such as cold-chain distribution and high-value asset tracking. Motorola’s partner in the venture is Intelleflex, which has built an RFID platform specifically to support the application of RFID technology in environments that require the signals to travel fairly long distances.

Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility Division Intelleflex , which has built an RFID platform specifically to support the application of RFID technology in environments that require the signals to travel fairly long distances.

Through this alliance, Motorola and Intelleflex expect to start releasing new solutions that the companies can sell either jointly or individually by the end of 2008. The solutions are expected to target the automotive, food and drug, electronics, government, and health-care sectors.

In addition to working with Intelleflex on new solutions, Motorola—through its venture capital arm—also is contributing to Intelleflex’s latest round of venture funding.

“RFID continues to be a compelling technology, and companies understand the security and efficiencies it brings to the infrastructure,” saysear path to a return-on-investment. We look forward to further extending RFID throughout multiple industries.”

Motorola executives believe Intelleflex’s extended-range technology is exactly what potential users of RFID are seeking.

“Many of the most important emerging applications of RFID technology depend upon extended capability solutions, with features such as large user memory, long-range operation, advanced security architectures, robust performance in difficult RF environments, and sensors for environmental data capture of items like temperature exposure,” says Bob Sanders, VP and general manager of advanced data capture, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions. “By delivering these types of solutions, we will better serve our customers in markets like cold-chain distribution and asset tracking. We chose to partner with Intelleflex because they have established themselves as the technology leader in this product category.”
