Digitalization is changing the rail industry as companies adapt to new technologies and stricter cybersecurity regulations. To support rail operators and systems integrators with these requirements, Moxa Inc., an IRIS silver-rated provider of rail communications solutions, has introduced a new range of EN 50155-certified products. The portfolio includes onboard switches, onboard computers, wireless communications devices and IP cameras, designed to help operators improve digitalization and meet cybersecurity standards.

Operational and technical considerations for rail networks

Digital technologies in the rail industry are influencing how networks are operated, maintained and managed for passengers. This transition calls for updated tools, increased bandwidth and reliable real-time connectivity to support train control and monitoring systems (TCMS), predictive maintenance, safety condition monitoring and multimedia passenger information (PIS).

As data processing and digital interconnectivity expand, cybersecurity should be integrated as a fundamental design consideration. Strengthening cybersecurity supports operational continuity, infrastructure protection and compliance with regulations such as the EU’s NIS2 Directive and the U.S. TSA Security Directives. It is also necessary to meet thesecurity requirements of the forthcoming FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System), an international standard for rail communication.

Solutions for the future of rail

Using a security-focused networking framework, Moxa’s new rail product line provides a foundation for digital network expansion while accommodating onboard space and power limitations. The product lineup includes:

  • TN-4500B Series onboard switches - 8–28 ports, up to 8 GbE uplinks and  150 W PoE budget to support onboard networks.
  • V3400 Series onboard x86 computers - multicore computing platform with dual 5G, LTE/Wi-Fi,  Wi-Fi 6 and integrated security for applications requiring higher computing and control capabilities.
  • V1200 Series onboard arm computers— - slim, compact design with dual-wireless 5G/LTE and Wi-Fi 6 for retrofits and lightweight edge computing.
  • TAP-M310R Series Train-to-ground access points and WAC-M300 Series wireless controllers - dual-band Wi-Fi 6 connectivity with under-50 ms seamless handover, centralized management and diagnostic features.
  • VPort 07-3 Series IP cameras - IP66-rated, 3-megapixel cameras with H.265 compression for video monitoring.

All products comply withinternational railway standards, including EN 50155 and EN 45545. They are developed according to the IEC 62443-4-1 secure development life cycle and are designed for deployment across multiple applications, from individual equipment upgrades to full system integration.

“Moxa's latest product offerings for rail once again highlight our unwavering commitment to rail customers by providing a unified, secure, and futureproof foundation and ensuring product longevity for their digital transformation,” said Samuel Chiu, head of the transportation business group at Moxa Inc. “We’ve worked closely with rail operators and system integrators to address evolving standards and regulations, retrofit challenges, and new applications. This collaboration allows us to turn customer feedback into innovative solutions that accelerate digitalization in the rail industry.”
