Hilscher North America has introduced the Hilscher comX 90CN, an embedded communication module designed to support secure, multiprotocol industrial communication in space-constrained devices.

Unlike the standard comX 90, the comX 90CN does not include pre-installed network connectors. Manufacturers can instead position the physical network interfaces on their device baseboard. This configuration allows the module to be integrated into field devices, drives, robots and other industrial automation equipment where installation space is limited.

The comX 90CN allows device manufacturers to place network interfaces on their device baseboard. This arrangement lets manufacturers select connector locations based on their device design, reduce space requirements and integrate the module into products while retaining the comX 90 platform’s core functionality.

comX 90 functionality in a connector-free module

Based on Hilscher’s multiprotocol-capable netX 90 communication controller, the comX 90CN provides the same core functionality as the comX 90 platform. The module measures 30 × 70 mm and supports multiple Industrial Ethernet technologies through firmware selection, including:

Industrial Ethernet:

• PROFINET
• EtherCAT
• EtherNet/IP
• Modbus/TCP
• CC-Link IE Field Basic
• POWERLINK
• Sercos

The module also supports IIoT communication through OPC UA and MQTT for applications such as connected automation, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Embedded security functions

The comX 90CN includes the security functions from the netX 90 platform, including:

• Hardware-assisted cryptographic functions
• Secure Boot
• Certificate and key management
• User management

These functions support device designs that require embedded security capabilities and industrial communication.

The comX 90CN is a part of Hilscher’s comX 90 communication platform. Customers can choose between the standard version with integrated network connectors and the connector-free version for integration with a custom device baseboard.
