Learning Objectives

  • Safety light curtain improves data acquisition, communications with Bluetooth wireless.
  • Safety device wireless communication, in new or existing applications helps Industry 4.0, smart factories.

A safety-rated light curtain with Bluetooth interface is designed to complement the needs and demands of the smart factory. Reliable, easy to install, use and obtain operational status for quick diagnostics for minimal downtime are among the needed features. More efficient data collection and efficient use of wireless communications are among the factory of the future, Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) architectures.

Safety light curtain can tally, communicate trips with Bluetooth wireless

Smart factories enable seamless remote data extraction from machine operations. This includes data such as run times, material management, and component-level details, such as safety light curtains and other devices related to safety functions. Status and alerts go to designated personnel once a light curtain has been actuated. The device also can count number of safety light curtain device uses to help preventive maintenance. For safety devices that allow programming, it is crucial to be able to identify which program is active, when it was programmed and who performed the programming. That information can be made available with a smartphone or tablet.

Communication of safety devices, existing or new construction

Being able to attain some smart factory benefits extends beyond new construction to existing plants with preexisting equipment. Safety rated electronic components are available that allow communication and exchange of data providing Industry 4.0 and IIoT data capabilities. Such devices advance safety functions on current equipment and for equipment designed when safety may not have been in the forefront.
