Profibus International and WorldFIP say they support the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Committee of Action recent vote to count a disputed ballot by the Brazilian national committee in favor of the proposed Data Link Layer (DLL) standards for IEC 61158. Profibus chairman Klaus-Peter Lindner said his organization “welcomes the clarification brought about by this development” despite the technical and marketing concerns. “Profibus International acknowledges that IEC 1158 DLL and Application Layers are supported by the appropriate majority of participating countries and looks forward to contributing towards the voting on the FDIS,” adds Mr. Linder. “One concern is to make sure documentation is correct so interests of fieldbus users are protected. A large number of deficiencies in the proposed standard were reported by many countries voting in October 1997. Profibus representatives say they have reservations about IEC 1158 because it is process-industry-led and unproven. “A stable H1 (low speed) subset for the process industries may exist but an H2 (high speed) solution for factory automation does not and may not be viable. The proposed standard could be ambiguous and unworkable,” Mr. Linder warns.
