The Automation Federation has been created by an agreement among ISA (Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society) OMAC, and WBF. The three charter organizations plan to retain separate identities while working cooperatively to serve the industry. The federation expects to:

Coordinate and unify the work of member organizations engaged in advancement of the science and engineering of automation technologies and applications, encompassing design, development, production, and application of devices and systems that sense, measure, manage, and control industrial processes and manufacturing operations;

Promote the value and image of the automation profession;

Facilitate development and dissemination of educational and informational resources intended to establish new generations of professionals and enhance the effectiveness of existing professionals; and

Facilitate the promulgation of industry standards, guidelines, and services that will enhance efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and safety of automation technology and applications.
The organization agreed on the scope of the managing director position and announced its board of directors: Maurice Wilkins, (WBF), Andy McDonald (OMAC), Steve Huffman (ISA), Ken Baker (ISA), and Patrick Gouhin, ISA executive director.
