The OPC Foundation announced that the OPC UA Safety Compliance Test Tool (UASCTT) has been certified by TÜV SÜD for conformity testing of OPC UA Safety over client-server communications. The certification supports consistent testing of safety communication in industrial automation.
The UASCTT, developed in an IFAK-led project (Institut für Automation und Kommunikation e.V.), supports testing of OPC UA Safety implementations, helping vendors confirm their devices meet the functional safety and interoperability requirements.
OPC UA Safety is standardized as Part 15 (10000-015) of the OPC UA Framework and was developed by the OPC Foundation’s Safety Joint Working Group, formed with Profibus & Profinet International (PI) in the year 2018. The group, chaired by Christian Eitner (Siemens), helped define specifications that support safety communication independent of the underlying transport layers, consistent with the “black channel” approach used in the OPC UA standard (IEC 62541).
In the next phase of development, the UASCTT’s will add support for OPC UA PubSub and OPC UA FX (Field eXchange). These extensions relate to the mapper concept within the black channel architecture and are intended to support OPC UA Safety across additional communication models.
