What Makes Matthew an Engineering Leader
Matthew is a lead automation developer who leads a high-performing team supporting the food and beverage and specialty chemical markets. He excels at developing others, coaching team members and “teaching the teachers” to multiply leadership across the group.
Matthew combines deep technical expertise with industry knowledge and trusted client relationships, consistently using those strengths to elevate both his team and peers. His leadership strengthens the team’s capacity and quality while developing future leaders for Interstates.
Leadership & Industry Contributions
Matthew demonstrated strong leadership when he stepped in to support a peer who was managing a struggling project and team. The project faced declining client confidence, inconsistent communication and team members who lacked clear direction and support.
Matthew established regular check-ins, coached his peer on client communication and worked alongside them on-site to assess issues and create a clear action plan. He helped uncover root causes, including performance and training gaps, and supported the development of a targeted improvement plan.
As progress was made, Matthew intentionally stepped back, allowing his peer to lead while continuing to build their confidence. As a result, the project returned to track, client trust was restored and the employee grew into a strong, engaged contributor.
Matthew has also contributed to broader industry improvement through work on internal quality standards aligned with industry best practices. His efforts supported Interstates’ achievement of CSIA certification as a system integrator, strengthening how work is executed across teams.
In addition, Matthew has helped develop training and reinforce consistent expectations, improving how teams learn and deliver. His focus on standardization and quality has strengthened internal capability and the reliability of Interstates’ solutions, contributing to client outcomes and alignment with industry-leading practices.
Why Matthew Chose This Career
Matthew first developed an interest in computer programming, which sparked his curiosity about how technology can solve problems and improve processes. After working as a software developer, he was introduced to PLCs and became interested in the role they play in automation and controls.
That experience showed Matthew how his technical background could be applied in a more hands-on, practical setting. He now enjoys work that combines problem-solving, technology and real-world impact.
