Use of Ethernet and wireless Ethernet in industrial facilities is expected to increase at compound annual growth rates (CAGRs) of 21.8% and 34.8%, respectively, during the next three years, according to a new study by Venture Development Corp. (VDC).

Shipments of wired Ethernet infrastructure networking products are expected to increase from $846 million in 2003 to more than $1.5 billion in 2006, while shipments of wireless Ethernet components are expected to increase from $62 million in 2003 to $152 million in 2006, according to “Worldwide Industrial Markets for Ethernet Infrastructure Components and Network Software.”

To generate its projections, VDC surveyed end-users, OEMs, and system integrators. These industrial users report their main motivations for implementing Ethernet include its high reliability, high security, and low installation costs; that it’s an established/proven technology; and that it’s easy to integrate with existing networks.
