The April 22 webcast on Control Engineering audience research: “Control Systems: HMI, SCADA and PLCs” includes expert commentary about related trends. The study on human-machine interface (HMI), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) was conducted by Control Engineering to obtain insights from automation engineering professionals on brand awareness, purchasing behavior and current and future trends related to control systems.

Study sample was selected from qualified Control Engineering media subscribers with valid email addresses involved in the purchase or specification HMI, PLCs and/or SCADA systems. Commentary and insights on the research and related topics will be offered during the webcast, “Research review: Control systems, HMI, SCADA and PLCs.” Webcast audience can interact via a poll and question-and-answer session. A certificate of completion and PDF of the presentation will be available to registrants to this free webcast.

Participants in the Control Engineering webcast, “Research review: Control systems, HMI, SCADA and PLCs” are, left to right, Mark Hoske, content manager/editor with Control Engineering, CFE Media and Technology since 1994; Tyler Wall, associate editor, Control Engineering and co-host of the Control Engineering Bridging the Gap podcast; and Jon Breen, founder/owner, Breen Machine Automation Services.

Three HMI, SCADA, PLC research webcast learning objectives

Webcast learning objectives are to:

  • Review some of the Control Engineering audience research findings on “Control Systems: HMI, SCADA and PLCs,” including background of survey respondents, and purchasing behavior and product trends.

  • Examine audience responses to current challenges with and future innovations for HMI, SCADA and PLCs in the Control Engineering research, “Control Systems: HMI, SCADA and PLCs.”

  • Participate in an audience poll and ask experts questions about HMI, SCADA and PLC topics.

Three HMI, SCADA, PLC research webcast participants welcome audience participation

Webcast participants are:

Questions in this study, especially the challenges and future innovation section, are informed by the CFE Media and Technology New Products for Engineers Database, submitted articles, interviews with industry suppliers, system integrators and users, careful listening at automation industry tradeshows, experience with prior Control Engineering research and automation.

Survey respondent views about exploring new brands of HMI, SCADA, PLCs

The study results said, “Eighty-eight percent of respondents are open to exploring new brands for their next HMI, SCADA or PLC purchase” (Figure 2). Among leading factors that could drive this change are easier system integration with existing products, programming/configuration, technical and customer support, and easier system integration with existing network capabilities.

Control Engineering research from April 2024 said “Eighty-eight percent of respondents are open to exploring new brands for their next HMI, SCADA, or PLC purchase.” Drivers of that change includes easier system integration with other products and programming/configuration, invested brand in technical and customer support and easier system integration with existing networks. About that, Breen said, “The 88% figure for being willing to consider other brands is shocking to me. I would’ve guessed closer to 20%. This might be because such a large portion of respondents come from small companies, which are usually more open. The pandemic and its supply chain issues may also have an impact, since people weren’t able to get what they were used to. And it’s probably fair to say that some respondents say ‘Yes,’ but the answer is really ‘No.’”
